Why Birthdays Are My Favourite
Who doesn’t love a celebration! It’s an opportunity to check out of the daily grind with friends and family, listen to good music and dance like no-one is watching.
But I want to tell you a secret: my favourite type of birthday is a family one. I was reflecting on why I always have such an amazing time working at these events and I realised it’s the social dynamics.
Friends tend to see each other more often; they share the highs and lows of life together and are bonded by groups. Those connections are formed at work, through acquaintances, during pastimes, like festivals or other interests.
Family, however, well, we all know you can’t pick them! This is where the joy comes in… “Big” birthdays, ending in a zero, and birthdays in general can bring together family members from across the globe.
Often, personally, I only see my immediate family on a regular basis. Extended family reunions tend to be only a few times a year. I think in the world we live in it’s quite normal for everyone to be focussed on what’s immediately around them.
That’s why birthday parties that include family are the most fun. A truly special occasion. Legendary tales are recounted and shared, reconnections are made and sometimes there are even introductions of girlfriends and boyfriends to extended family for the first time.
The Unique Dynamics of Milestone Birthday Parties
So here’s the drill: all parties tend to start off slow and well-behaved! If there’s food, that’s where everyone’s head is at initially. From a work perspective, it’s photos of greetings, giftings and group shots. I also like to take candids from afar, doing my “David Attenborough” style social-documentary, but with a camera.
Capturing Cake Moments & Candid Reactions
Fast forward — food, 2–3 drinks (for those that partake), and it’s cake time!!
Now, I always try to ask the organisers to give me a heads up on the cake timing. Sometimes cakes just pop up out of nowhere regardless! I need to have the reflexes of a cat to capture these moments. I like to get the “cake approach”, glee and candle blow. I have to delicately put myself forward, navigating a mass of bodies to capture this moment. Top, top priority!
Also, other guests want to snap this moment so, I’m sometimes shooting around camera phones held aloft, to get the money-shot. It’s not always the easiest job in the world. Tons of pre-emptive thinking goes through my head in the space of less than a minute. That’s why it’s best to book a seasoned photographer, especially for important occasions.

Birthdays with family and friends always have the best and craziest dancing! There are some moves that haven’t been seen for 10 years plus! Photographing the scene is a real privilege. I always hope my candids bring as much happiness and giggles to people as they do for me when I’m shooting them.
The birthday boy or girl is far too busy enjoying themselves to spot all of the fun and interactions, so that’s where I step in. I’m not just an observer, I like to get my groove on too if the DJ is playing my tune. I’ve danced to many a “Candy” at these events. I can’t help myself!!!
